Myrna L. Gillis

Originally from Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Myrna attended Dalhousie Law School after completing her degree in English Literature at St. Francis Xavier University. After law school, Myrna clerked at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

Myrna is an arbitrator and mediator and a member of the Atlantic Provinces Arbitration and Mediation Institute. She is trained in interest-based bargaining, conflict resolution, and alternative dispute resolution techniques. 

In practice for more than 15 years, Myrna has extensive litigation experience and has providing training programs for clients and other legal professionals.  She has also lectured at Dalhousie University.

Myrna’s accomplishments include receiving the Robert E. Bamford Award, the G.O. Forsyth Prize, the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal, the Dalhousie Alumni Leadership Award and the Golden X Award as a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University. 

Myrna has managed files requiring attendance at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, the Supreme Court (Family Division), the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board, Occupational Health and Safety Board, the Canada Pension Plan Appeals Board, the Residential Tenancies Board, the Human Rights Commission and Small Claims Court.  Myrna is actively involved in the community and has served on the boards of DASC, the Boys and Girls Club (Canada and Nova Scotia), Dalhousie Law Alumni and For a Dream’s Sake Society. She has also fundraised for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada and the Kidney Foundation.

Barbara Darby

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Barbara attended Dalhousie Law School and has a degree in English Literature from the University of Lethbridge and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in English Literature from Queen’s.

Her background prior to working as a lawyer includes working as a post-secondary educator and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada post-doctoral researcher; operating a photography business; organizing for a union; and managing a theatre company.

Barbara has certifications in human rights training and workplace investigations. She is trained in interest-based bargaining. Barbara has managed files requiring attendance at the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the Small Claims Court, the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, the Supreme Court (Family Division), and the Court of Appeal.

Barbara’s accomplishments have included receiving the gold medal as a graduate from Dalhousie Law, and awards in Constitutional, Intellectual Property, and Family Law, as well as the Muriel Duckworth Award.

Barbara currently volunteers with the Elizabeth Fry Society Mainland Nova Scotia and is a board member, is a board member of the Sable Island Preservation Trust, and volunteers with ReachAbility, and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society Race Relations Committee.  She is a member of Bar Council for the Barristers' Society.  She fundraises for the fight against  ovarian cancer.
